FLAUBERT, Gustave.

Salammbô. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1863.
Large in-8 (218 x 143 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch., 474 pp., 1 f.n.ch.; salmon half-marquin with corners, spine with decorated ribs, marbled edges (contemporary binding).
Original edition.
"Salammbô is not a simple historical reconstruction, a meticulous evocation; it is a work lived, written with passion, all animated by a vast breath that runs from one chapter to the next until the end, it is a vast epic, where neither the picturesque nor the warmth are missing.... The whole book is raised by a violent passion that gives it an astonishing presence. The magnificent style, sometimes too much sought-after, naturally contributes to it, a style that will be a school of thought among the Parnassians and the symbolists" (Laffont-Bompiani).
A precious copy by the theophile Gautier
A copy sent "to my dear and kind friend Théophile Gautier,
Gustave Flaubert".
Gautier wrote a long and magnificent article expressing his admiration for Salammbô in the
Moniteur universel of December 22, 1862: "No Oriental imagination has surpassed the marvels heaped up in Salammbô's apartment. Modern eyes are unaccustomed to such splendours. (...) These exotic words, more easily understood, will lose their strangeness, and Mr. Flaubert's style will appear as it is, full, robust, sonorous, of an originality that owes nothing to anyone, colourful when necessary, precise, sober and male when the story requires no ornament - the style of a master at last! Its volume will remain as one of the highest literary monuments of this century. "
Originally intended for another friend, the dedication has been modified with two words crossed out by the author. We also know of another copy sent by the author to Gautier (one of the 25 copies on Holland).
Provenance: Théophile Gautier (mailing, ex-libris, and dry stamp of the monogram 'TG' on the title).
Carteret, I, 266; Clouzot, 121.
