The rommant of the rose printed in Paris. Paris, Jean Petit, [circa 1497]. In-folio (273 x 192 mm) of 142 ff.n.ch. Collation: a8 b-g6 h8 i-z6. Last folio with the engraved portrait followed by the name Jean de Meung; red morocco, dishes richly decorated with a wide border composed of golden dotted squares, each with a mosaic rose, central piece repeating the decoration, spine with ribs decorated in the same style, interior roulette, red morocco lining decorated with a semé of roses, embossed edges (Lortic), matching red morocco case. Extremely rare incunabulum edition of the Roman de la rose. Bibliographies indicate that it was printed by Le Petit Laurens for Antoine Vérard or Jean Petit; this copy bears the mark of Jean Petit on the title page. The Gesamtkatalog locates 7 copies including this one. Of the two institutional copies located in the United States, the Morgan Library copy is considered incomplete (the last page with the portrait is missing). Very fine edition, richly decorated with 87 woodcut vignettes. Carefully washed copy, strong yellow stain on half of the title page; complete with the last page with the portrait. Provenance: Robert Hoe (ex-libris, sale I, 2079). GW, 11860; Bechtel, G-370; BMC, VIII, 162; Claudin, II, 138; missing from Goff. The brown stain announced in the description is actually a restoration of the title, which is re-lettered in the white margin The last leaf is in gillotage.
