A magnificent silver, silver gilt and niello... - Lot 7 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A magnificent silver, silver gilt and niello binding Galicia, 2nd half of the 18th century This fine filigree binding, which contains a mid-18th century humash, is very richly decorated with multiple animals in the outer frame which are made in niello technique. It has a central medallion on each side. The first medallion represents an unusual character, surrounded by lions holding a crown, with the Hebrew letters Mem and Beth flanking the character. The other medallion has a standing bear in its centre. We can assume that the letter Beth comes from the typical name of that time in Galicia “Bärl”, in reference to the initial of the word “Bär”, which means bear in Yiddish. This binding is of absolutely superb quality and of typical Galician style. Early 19th century Galicia tax mark H_13,5 cm L_9 cm P_5 cm (5 ⁵/₁₆ x 3 ³⁵/₆₄ x 1 ³¹/₃₂)
