A rare and important silver cup Tlemcen, Algeria, circa 1900 This cup is elegantly decorated with plant motifs and contains inscriptions in Hebrew engraved by Abraham Gananassia. In addition to the names of several charitable societies (“Gmilout Hassadim”), the inscription cites a large number of names of personalities, members and officials from these societies, among which the names of Chalom Charaki, Massoud Hanai, Rabbi Yehuda Atouati, David Geane, Eliyahu Elbaz, David Amsallem, Moshe Geane, Massoud El-Hayich. Unmarked H_12,5 cm D_8,5 cm (4 ⁵⁹/₆₄ x 3 ¹¹/₃₂ in) Tlemcen is a city in north-western Algeria with over 1000 years of documented Jewish presence. The Jewish community flourished there under French rule. At the time this cup was made, about 5000 Jews lived in Tlemcen. The last Jews left the city in 1962. There is a synagogue in Paris founded by families originating from Tlemcen who continue to pray according to the Algerian tradition.  Their association is called : La Fraternelle, National Union of Friends of Tlemcen.
