LAMPE DE HANOUKKA UNIQUE EN OR
A unique gold Hannukah Lamp Austro-Hungary, circa 1870 This 18kt gold Hannukah lamp has several inscriptions. On the front and on the left flag, the name of the synagogue “Achdut Hakodesh” in Bucharest is mentioned, and the date of 1912. This synagogue was rebuilt from 1908, thanks to the efforts of the association “Achdut Hakodesh” which was created in 1903 in order to raise funds to finance this construction, as the old synagogue could no longer contain the growing number of members. The necessary funds were obtained after five years of efforts. The lamp was given by the association “Achdut Hakodesh” in memory of Rabbi Aaron Moshe Taubes (1787-1852), 60 years after his death, while his grandson Itzhaq Azik Taubes (1837-1920) was then the rabbi of the synagogue. Rabbi Aaron Moshe Taubes was the Rabbi of Iași and one of the most important rabbinical authorities in Romania. He is the author of several important writings, including Karne Re’eim. The inscription on the right flag indicates that this synagogue was that of the union of artisanal tailors. Finally, an inscription on the back of the lamp indicates that it was given to Rabbi Moses David Rosen (1912-1994) in 1957. He was then the Chief Rabbi of Romania and a member of the Romanian parliament, as well as the most influential Jewish religious leader in Communist Eastern Europe. A very similar lamp of almost identical size from the Austrian Empire, which was made in silver in the 19th century, is part of the collection of the Jewish Museum in New York. It appears in the catalogue “Five centuries of Hannukah lamps” (page 312, photo number 479) published by this museum. No other antique lamp made of gold is known, with the exception of a single and very important small lamp (made at the beginning of the 18th century in Holland), which makes this model so rare and so unique.  Unmarked H_16 cm (6 19/64) (incl. Chamach) L_23 cm P_4,5 cm (9 1/16 x 1 49/64 in)
