A highly important Silver Hanukkah lamp Amsterdam,... - Lot 13 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A highly important Silver Hanukkah lamp Amsterdam, 1730 Maker’s mark : Johannes Winter This very elegant lamp was made by the silversmith Johannes Winter, who was born in Groningen in 1703, and entered his maker’s mark at the Amsterdam guild in 1730. He was trained by the Groningen silversmith Hindick Jan Spanjer. In 1731 he married Anna van Hoven, who was probably related to the Amsterdam silversmith Pieter van Hoven, a renowned maker of Jewish silver in Amsterdam. Given the fact that Johannes Winter was born in Groningen, the chased design of the lamp can be related to decorations on typical Groningen teapots. The manner of chasing can often be found in the works by Groningen silversmiths. Silver Hanukkah lamps before 1800 are rather rare in the Netherlands. Only a very few comparable Dutch Hannukah silver lamps of the first half of the 18th century are known to exist. Most of them are part of museum collections, and one is held in the private Royal collection in the Netherlands. Fully marked H_30 cm L_25 cm P_7,5 cm (11 ¹³/₁₆ x 9 ²⁷/₃₂ x 2 ⁶¹/₆₄ in)
