A silver Pydion Haben tray Lemberg, early... - Lot 15 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A silver Pydion Haben tray Lemberg, early 19th century This tray represents the biblical scene where Abraham attemps to sacrifice his son Isaac. The embossed text inscribed in Hebrew reads : “Do not raise your hand on the boy” (Genesis, Chap. 22, verse 12). This Pydion Haben tray seems to be the only one from Lemberg that contains a text embossed in Hebrew. The Pydion Haben (redemption of the firstborn) is a commandment in Judaism by which a firstborn Jewish son is “redeemed” from the Cohen by the use of silver coins, that is, he is released from being predestined by being the firstborn to be consecrated only to the Lord. Makers’ mark, Lemberg tax hallmark at the start of the 19th century, hallmark of the city of Lemberg no longer visible (worn over time) H_22,5 cm L_34,5 cm (8 ⁵⁵/₆₄ x 13 ³⁷/₆₄ in)
