A porcelain polychrome Seder plate Herend,... - Lot 17 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A porcelain polychrome Seder plate Herend, Hungary, 1875 This dish is painted with refined and harmonious decorations and rendered in pristine quality. The Pessah Seder order is inscribed on the bigger cercle, and the plate is dated in the centre. It is marked on the back with the Herend factory mark, and signed by Meir Hoffman in Hebrew, which may indicate either the owner’s name or that of a Jewish artist who decorated this plate in the Herend workshop. D_30 cm (11 ¹³/₁₆ in) The porcelain manufacture Herend was founded in 1826. It became supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1872. He was an admirer of Herend’s work and was regularly puchasing their porcelain as gifts for his distinguished guests. Herend won the gold medal at the International Ceramics exhibition in 1901 in Saint Petersburg. Through the World Wars and the Communist era, the compay maintained very high standards of manufacturing quality and innovating design. From the beginning of their establishment, Judaïca items were produced as special orders, some of which are exhibited at the Hungarian Jewish Museum collection in Budapest, and some belong to public and private Judaïca collections
