An important polychrome wooden sculpture Germany,... - Lot 19 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
An important polychrome wooden sculpture Germany, Rhön region, circa 1800 The rabbi is sitting on his chair and reading a holy text. The head and the jaw are mobile, bouncing when in motion. The Rhön is a mountain region situated in the centre of Germany and has a long-standing tradition of crafting wooden objects. Multiple sculptures representing Jews, with mobile parts, were crafted during the 18th and 19th centuries, in particular picturing peddlers, money changers, praying or studying rabbis. This extremely rare sculpture, of which very few still remain today, is in excellent condition, very remarkable for such an object. This sculpture is documented in Wolfgang Brückner’s book : « Rhöner Schnitzfiguren aus dem 19. Jahrhundert » (photo number 55, page 108). H_40 cm (15 ³/₄ in)
