A very rare and historically important pair... - Lot 24 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A very rare and historically important pair of silver Tefillin cases Germany, circa 1770 These cases present the specificity of having different sizes, the case for the head Tefillin being larger than the case for the hand Tefillin, unlike nowadays Tefillin, whose cases are of identical size.  The existence of this custom of differentiated sizes is illustrated by engravings from Johann Buxtorf and Bernard Picard in the first half of the 18th century. These cases are crafted in highest quality and are of utmost rarity. Fully marked (not identified) (tête) H_4 cm P_4 cm L_6 cm (1 ³⁷/₆₄ x 1 ³⁷/₆₄ x 2 ²³/₆₄ x in) (main) H_4 cm P_3 cm L_5 cm (1 ³⁷/₆₄ x 1 ³/₁₆ x 1 ³¹/₃₂)
