A magnificent 18-carat gold and precious... - Lot 28 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A magnificent 18-carat gold and precious stones binding Carlo Weingrill, Verona, Italy, 1900 This absolutely unique golden binding was offered to Rabbi Josef Ben-Sineor on the 23rd of October 1900 by Mr Jacques Elias. The front cover is decorated with the crowned Tables of the Law and rich flowers and leaves decoration. The inscription on the back cover reads : “To my friend, Rabbi Josef Ben-Sineor, a thank you gift for your contribution to our holy community, with recognition. Jacques Elias, the 30th of the month of Tishrei of the year (5)661.” On the spine, a verse from Ezekiel (16 :6) is cited : “I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth.”, which testifies to the very long-lasting friendship between Rabbi Josef Ben-Sineor and Jacques Elias. This binding seems to be the only existing antique Jewish binding made of 18-carat gold and precious stones. Enrico Weingrill succeeded to combine the traditional Italian style on the front cover, which recalls the classical 18th century baroque design, together with the contemporary Art Nouveau design of the year 1900. Fully marked H_14,5 cm L_11,5 cm (5 ⁴⁵/₆₄ x 4 ¹³/₃₂)
