“At the Rome Ghetto” Oil on canvas (framed), 1879 Signed on the lower right side. This painting depicts a Jewish street vendor showing his goods in the Jewish neighbourhood of Rome. H_65 cm L_82 cm (25 ¹⁹/₃₂ x 32 ⁹/₃₂ in) After completing his studies at the Fine Arts Academy in Liege (1856-1867), Leon Philippet travelled to Paris to study (1866-1867), then stayed in Italy from 1868 to 1887. He received a scholarship from the Lambert Darchis Foundation (1868-1872) and stayed in Rome during almost 20 years, where he painted mostly scenes from popular life in Rome. After returning to Belgium, he mainly painted portraits and landscapes from the Belgian coast. His paintings were exhibited at the Liege Fine Arts Cercle between 1887 and 1898.
