An Italian double-compartment brass charity... - Lot 35 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
An Italian double-compartment brass charity box circa 1800 The main compartment was used to collect money for the needs of the local community, whereas the lower compartment was dedicated to the Jews of Tiberias, as indicated by the Hebrew inscriptions to be found on this part. Four cities were known as the holy cities of the Land of Israel : Jerusalem, Hebron, Tzfat and Tiberias. Once a year, the money collected for these four cities was brought back to the Holy Land. This tzedakah box is the one that was used in Italy for collecting money for the city of Tiberias. This object is a testimony of the importance in the eyes of the European local communities of polish Jews who immigrated to Tiberias at the end of the 18th century and lived under very difficult economic conditions.
