An important Dutch prayer shawl (Tallith)... - Lot 41 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
An important Dutch prayer shawl (Tallith) with French brocade from Lyon. Mid 18th century The Tallith is made of twill silk with four ornamental silk brocade corners. In the brocade is made of gold leaves, gold thread, silver thread and colourful silk. The design contains small roses and lilac silk embroidered flowers, all executed in high proficiency in typical French Rococo style. This very special prayer shawl was formerly the property of the famous Jewish Portuguese noble family, Mendes De Costa, from Amsterdam. This tallith was exhibited at the Jewish museum in Amsterdam “Joods Historisch Museum” and is pictured in the book “Orphan Objects” (page 137, photo number B1767) published by this museum in 1997. An etrog bag matching the tallit and made with the same fabric as the one used to decorate its corners, also appears in this book (see page 152, photo number 6491), and also belonged to the Mendes De Costa family. The tallith is also pictured in the Journal of the Sephardic Studies program of the Yeshiva University, New York, published in 1970 (volume 4, number 1-2, page 93). It is in an impeccable state of conservation although it is over 270 years old. This may be due to the fact that very wealthy families like the Mendes De Costa used to have Talliths made especially for each holiday in the Jewish calendar, and therefore only used them for these annual occasions.
