A velvet Huppa textile Bacau, Romania, 1879 This... - Lot 47 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A velvet Huppa textile Bacau, Romania, 1879 This Romanian velvet Jewish marriage canopy (« Huppah ») is embroidered with many ornaments. In the centre, surrounded by an elaborate olive wreath is a pair of lions supporting an enthroned codex. An inscription embroiled in the open books reads « Mercy and truth are met together ; righteousness and peace have kissed each other » (Psalms 85 :11). Below the book is a red scroll mentioning the date « Tu Bishvat (5)639 (8.2.1879) and the city of Bacau. Surrounding the centre heraldic medallion is another inscription : « First society (Hevra Kadisha) for the Health of the sick etc ». It is possible that the Hevra Kadisha donated this Huppah to the community. Bacau has proven Jewish presence since the 18th century. At the time this Huppah was made, about 750 families lived there. The Hevra Kadisha was founded in 1871 and, as can also be understood from the inscription on this Huppah, cared not only about the deceased, but was also taking care of the sick people of the town.
