Carved ivory diptych representing the Entry... - Lot 3 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Carved ivory diptych representing the Entry of Christ in Jerusalem. Under three arcatures, on the left shutter, Christ mounted on a donkey blesses with his right hand, four apostles standing behind him and a woman in front, on the right shutter, three women welcome him with, behind them, the publican Zacchaeus mounted in a tree and the inhabitants of Jerusalem whose heads are above the city walls. Italy, Venice, ca. 1360/70 Height: 8.8 cm - Width: 12.1 cm - Weight: 74 g (small accidents at the hinges) Venetian carved ivories from the 14th century are relatively rare in public collections. The workmanship and style of this diptych are to be compared with the one preserved in the V & A which represents the Dormition and Coronation of the Virgin (Inv. A.566-1910, fig.). Although the bas-reliefs here are simpler and sculpted to a lesser depth, there are similarities in the stiffness of the drapery, the nobility of the faces and the delicacy of the architectural details. Consulted by P. Williamson and G. Davies, Medieval Ivory Carvings 1200 - 1550, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 2014, Part I, cat.106.
