Saint Sebastian made of wood (linden?) carved... - Lot 66 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Saint Sebastian made of wood (linden?) carved in the round. The young saint is tied to a tree to which he is leaning in a contorted attitude, the right arm raised, the other behind his back and the left leg bent, his gaze raised towards the sky; treatment of the naturalist tree with trunk with branches topped with foliage; signature on the mound on the left I. ELS. North of France, end of 16th century Height: 83.5 cm (small lacks and finger restorations) Provenance: - former Scrive collection, Lille - Maurice Larminet collection (1883-1968), Mons-en-Baroeul Exhibition Roubaix 1911, L'art dans les Flandres françaises aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, cat. V. Champier sous la dir. de, pl. L. The name of the sculptor who signed this beautiful Saint Sebastian could not be identified. In the exhibition catalogue of Roubaix, there is another saint Sebastian very similar to this one but 120 cm high. It thus seems that this artist was fond of this theme in this northern region where archery has been practised since the Middle Ages and where many archers' brotherhoods flourished, of which Sebastian was the patron saint.
