Santiago de Compostela in jet carved in the... - Lot 73 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Santiago de Compostela in jet carved in the round. Standing, he holds in his right hand the pilgrim's bumblebee with a chaplaincy and an open book in the other; wearing a hat with a wide raised brim decorated with a shell, he is dressed in a tunic and a long coat with one side coming back to the front. Spain, 16th century Height: 16.7 cm - Width: 5.4 cm - Depth: 2.5 cm (accidents and restorations especially in the lower part) These jet-shaped statuettes, known as Azabaches, were a speciality of the Santiago de Compostela region in Spain from the 12th century until 18th century. Intended for pilgrims, they were real souvenir objects. Jet, a wood from fossilized conifers, was also used in English and French workshops, but the latter never managed to match the Galician talent. Work consulted: M. Trusted, Spanish sculpture, a catalogue of the collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum edition, 1996, p 142-3.
