Mitre case, wooden core covered with leather... - Lot 95 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Mitre case, wooden core covered with leather gilded with a small iron decorated with a scroll and a cartouche enclosing the coat of arms of a bishop Azure, on a chief charged with three mullets in saltire, an oak tree Or with branches in saltire and an armed dexter arm moving from the sinister flank, surmounted by two hooks and set with fleurs-de-lys around the circumference. Italy, 18th century Height: 7.3 cm - Width: 36.5 cm - Depth: 50.7 cm (lacks, wormholes) The coat of arms could correspond to the coat of arms of the Roman family Manni but no bishop is known to be within its bosom. The tree depicted is, however, an oak tree, a well-known emblem of the Della Rovere family. It is perhaps a French branch of this family which gave popes and bishops, some of whom practiced in France, the name Della Rovere was then francized as De la Rovère or De la Royère.
