A four-compartment embossed leather sheath... - Lot 104 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A four-compartment embossed leather sheath with a heron and scroll decoration on one side, surmounted by an oval blazon cut in the middle, with three stars and the monogram JN on the chief and grotesque masks on two other sides. 16th century Length: 21.5 cm - Width: 4.5 cm It seems that this is not really a coat of arms but a typical decoration found on some Renaissance cutlery cases. The oval shape was, until the end of the 16th century, generally reserved for women. Provenance: former R collection. Richebé (H.R. d'Allemagne, Les Accessoires du costume et du mobilier, tome II, Paris, 1928, Pl. CCXIII, n° 5)
