Oval bronze PLATE representing the battle... - Lot 153 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Oval bronze PLATE representing the battle of the Centaurs and the Lapiths on a colonnade background. Inscription on the lower part IOANNES DE CÃS B. Italy, Giovanni Bernadi (1496-1553), c. 1525 -1535 An ancient overmoulding of an intaglio presumably made of rock crystal. Height: 8.5 cm - Width: 10.6 cm - Thickness: 0.5 cm (hanging hole) The Bargello Museum in Florence keeps a smaller oval plate illustrating a Lion Hunt on an architectural background signed by the same artist. It was given to Giovanni Bernadi, who was a medallist and stone engraver, in the image of his elder brother Valerio Belli, a goldsmith from Vicenza. This plate is an overmoulding of a large intaglio, a process that had already been used previously for bronze plates made from Belli's crystals. Works consulted: G. Toderi and F.
