IMPORTANT MEDAL in enamel painted in grisaille... - Lot 167 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
IMPORTANT MEDAL in enamel painted in grisaille on a black background with gold and rose highlights for the carnations representing the left profile of Emperor Galba from an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (fig.); inscriptions in the field *GALLBA* and I[LLVSTRUSSI]M[V]S. Limoges, mid-16th century Diameter: 28 cm (border restorations) The theme of the Twelve Caesars was popularised throughout the 16th century by the numerous publications of Suetonius' work. In the humanist current of the time, Limousin enamellers naturally took up the theme whether to decorate shaped pieces such as the lids of cups or to make large decorative plaques as here. They do not bear a monogram and several workshops provided different series generally inspired by Marcantonio Raimondi's engraved suite from the first decades of the 16th century. It is thought that these large medallions were intended to be inserted in woodwork that was part of the decoration of the rooms of palaces or castles. Work consulted: Exposition Limoges 2002, La rencontre des Héros, Musée Municipal de l'Evêché, V. Notin commissaire, cat, pp 188-201.
