RARE BOX with a domed lid, known as a travel... - Lot 169 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
RARE BOX with a domed lid, known as a travel sideboard, made of wood painted red and covered with wrought and stamped iron. Compartmentalized decoration of diamond-shaped latticework and bands bordering the lid with interlacing and laurel branches on the sides; front fitted with a hasp lock with a square-shaped chiselled and stamped iron palastre framed by two simple hasps; side handles. Northern France, first quarter of the 16th century Length: 129 cm - Width: 49.5 cm - Height: 63 cm (one hinge missing, small accidents) The Museum of the Middle Ages has a large chest of the same type in its collections (inv. Cl 13119, fig.a). Although larger in size, it has reached us in worse condition than the one in the Davioud collection, very similar to the chests appearing on an illumination of a manuscript kept at the Bibliothèque nationale illustrating "Louis XII receiving the homage of a book" (ms Fr 53, fol. 9, fig. b).
