Louis Valtat Louis Valtat was a French painter and printmaker associated with the Fauvist movement of the early 20th century. The early works of Valtat, often landscapes and street scenes, use the lightness of impressionism, the coloured dots of pointillism as well as luminous colours as in Péniches (Barges) (1892). Later, while suffering from tuberculosis, Valtat spent several autumns and winters on the Mediterranean, where he intensified his use of colour and began to express more Fauvist tendencies, especially in the seascapes. However, he never fully adopted the bold colors and shapes that characterized the Fauves. Born on August 8, 1869 in Dieppe, Normandy, Valtat studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Académie Julian. Valtat's classmates and contemporaries were Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, although Valtat remained distant from the Syntheist movement that influenced them. Valtat continued to paint until 1948, when he lost his sight due to glaucoma. He died on January 22, 1952 in Paris.
