Les Fleurs du mal. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et De Broise, 1857. In-12 : brown jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, gold filleted edges, fawn calf lining with double gilt fillet and floral frame in cold red and blue morocco, blue silk endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, folder, case (Carayon) First edition. Printed on Angoulême vellum, it was printed in an edition of 1,300 copies - without omitting the twenty or so copies on Hollande laid paper. A first issue copy, with notably the mistake "Feurs" in the running title of pages 31 and 108, and the mistake "captieux" for "capiteux" in the first lines of page 201. A fine copy, with large margins, in a lined binding by Carayon. Ex-libris in gilt letters at the foot of the second lining of R. Claude Lafontaine. Label of the Pierre Berès bookshop. The coloured etching by Frédéric Massé after Carlos Schwabe, which appeared as a frontispiece to Charles Meunier's edition in 1900, is bound in. Small spots on the title; the preserved spine of the cover is restored.
