Arthur RIMBAUD.
A Season in Hell. Brussels, Alliance typographique (M.-J. Poot et Compagnie), 1873. In-12 : paperback, under red printed cover. First edition printed at about 500 copies. Printed at the author's expense, it was not put on the market. Only work published by the poet himself during his lifetime. Having failed to pay his debt to the printer, Arthur Rimbaud had only a dozen copies that he offered to his friends. The printer kept the stock which was exhumed in 1901 by a Belgian bibliophile, Léon Losseau: "A certain number of copies, deteriorated by the water which had pierced the roof, were thrown in the big stove of the workshop, and I paid and had the 425 remaining ones sent to me. Copy in mint condition, as issued. (Bibliothèque nationale, En français dans le texte, 1990, no. 299).
