Arthur RIMBAUD.
Reliquary. Poetry. Preface by Rodolphe Darzens. Paris, L. Genonceaux, 1891. In-12 : paperback. Collective edition in part original : unique edition of 550 copies on wove paper. First issue copy, with the preface and the title with the date of 1891. Out of the 41 poems which appear here, 31 are in original edition. Ten others had previously appeared in the two editions of Verlaine's Poètes maudits. This collection was published without Rimbaud's assent. Pressed, the publisher wrote himself the preface according to Darzens' notes and published the volume in 1891. The preface writer was furious and had the edition seized. "This interesting episode of the history of symbolism took in the Parisian literary world the proportions of an event and contributed to Rimbaud's nascent fame" (Christian Galantaris). Reliquaire will be reissued the following year without the preface, with a new title dated 1892. Copy preserved as published. From the library of Dr. Lucien Graux, with ex-libris (cat. IX, 1959, n° 187). (Galantaris, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, n° 228: "If Darzens' preface (27 pages, some of which had appeared in the Revue indépendante) is marred by stylistic oversights, innumerable typos and mistakes of all kinds, it contains, on the other hand, first-hand information on Rimbaud, sometimes raw, spontaneously thrown on the paper and not watered down by a rewrite of propriety.)
