Ivan TOURGUÉNIEV.
Dym [Smoke, in Russian]. Moscow, 1868. In-8 : mauve percale à la Bradel, smooth spine decorated with bold and thin cold fillets, cold framing on the boards, spotted edges (period binding). First edition. It was published in Moscow by Salaïev in November 1867, despite the date of 1868 on the title page. A tale of a young Russian's impossible love for a married woman, Smoke paints an acidic portrait of the different classes of Russian society. The character of Gubaryov, in particular, a caricature of Herzen's double, provoked the latter's fury, who denounced the anti-Russian character of the work. "The novel aroused very lively controversy. Part of the press accused Turgenev of "having offended national sentiment", of being a "liar", a "slanderer", of "not knowing Russia at all", of despising his homeland" (Françoise Flamant and Edith Scherrer in Turgenev, Romans et nouvelles, II, p. 1162). The story takes place in Baden-Baden, the famous German spa, one of the most exclusive in Europe, where Turgenev stayed to get closer to the one he loved so much, the French actress and singer Pauline Viardot. Precious autograph letter, in Russian, on the false title: To Pauline Viardot from her long-time friend I. Tourgueniev Baden 1867 The provenance, the most intimate, speaks for itself. The work was immediately translated and published in French. Spine uniformly faded.
