[Guillaume APOLLINAIRE].
Religious manual of the French soldier for the uniform use of the army. Illustrated with numerous vignettes. Paris, Fortuné Wattelier, no date [circa 1900]. In-32 : black half cloth, black embossed paper boards (publisher's binding). Moving relic: the religious manual of the soldier Apollinaire annotated on the day of his incorporation in Nîmes. It bears on the first lining the autograph inscription signed in pencil: 2nd cl. G. de Kostrowitzky 38th Art. de camp. 70th bat. Nîmes - 6 Xbre 1914 - GA GA Guillaume The inscription, signed three times, is dated the day Apollinaire joined the 38th field artillery regiment in Nîmes: he had enlisted two days earlier. Louise de Coligny- Châtillon joined him on December 7 for a week, before the poet was sent to the front. The Manual was distributed to the soldiers. Like any book slipped into a soldier's pocket, the copy is very worn. The black percale slipcase is broken and one edge is missing. "I loved the Arts so much that I became an artilleryman"
