[Georges BATAILLE, sous le pseudonyme de] Pierre ANGÉLIQUE.
Madame Edwarda. Paris, Éditions du Solitaire, 1937 [actually 1941]. In-12 : paperback, printed and filled straw laid paper cover. First edition of what Marguerite Duras considered "one of the greatest texts of contemporary literature". It was published clandestinely in 1941, probably by Robert Chatté: the date of July 28, 1937 and the address of the Imprimerie Montchaude in Gex on the printing slip are fanciful and intended to deceive the vigilance of the authorities in the midst of the Occupation. Limited edition of 45 copies; one of 28 on white Auvergne paper (nº 25). A fine copy preserved as issued. (Pia, Les Livres de l'Enfer, col. 851: "The first edition, signed Pierre Angélique, appeared in 1941, in a small number, under the heading Éditions du Solitaire and with the date, deliberately false, of 1937. According to what Georges Bataille said later, the writing of Madame Edwarda only dates back to September and October 1941"- Dutel, Bibliographie des ouvrages érotiques publiés clandestralement en français entre 1920 et 1970, nº 1889).
