André BRETON.
Les Pas perdus. Paris, Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, 1924. In-12: brown calf, broad bands of reptile skin mosaic on the boards and on the smooth spine, lining and endpapers of long-grained mastic leather, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved, folder, case (Leroux, 1989). First edition. One of 50 copies on Lafuma paper (no. 44), the only large paper. Important collection of essays published in various journals between 1918 and the beginning of 1923, with the exception of the last text, the lecture delivered in Barcelona on November 17, 1922, which was not pre-published in spite of Breton's efforts with La Nouvelle Revue française. The work was completed eight months before the Manifesto of Surrealism: a key book, definitively imposing Breton's figure on the literary scene, "both an assessment and a springboard for a new beginning" (Marguerite Bonnet). Curiously, one of the most acerbic criticisms came from René Crevel who, in Les Feuilles libres, noted: "The author of Pas perdus is an excellent critic, I mean that he knows very well how to distort values and sell his copper for gold." An impeccably bound copy by Georges Leroux. The advertising leaflet is enclosed.
