Proofs of 176 pages in-12 printed on one side only, bound in half black morocco, smooth spine, two broad bands of royal blue and light blue morocco covering the boards, gilt head, spine preserved (René Kieffer's period binding). Corrected proofs of the Manifesto of Surrealism. Accompanied by a pre-printed butterfly from the Imprimerie Ste-Catherine of Bruges. The Manifesto is still under its original title of Introduction to Surrealism. 13 pages bear corrections in Breton's hand, notably the cover and title page. Addition of Antonin Artaud on page 28; addition of "Fargue is a surrealist in the atmosphere" and "Saint Léger is a surrealist at a distance" on page 44; deletion of a paragraph on page 51 with the comment "to be replaced by five lines of dots"; deletion of advertisements on page 68. Signed autograph letter on the cover: To Maurice Martin du Gard very friendly André Breton sept. 1924. Writer and journalist, Maurice Martin du Gard (1896-1970) was one of the figures of the literary Tout-Paris; he was the founder of the Nouvelles littéraires which he directed from 1922 to 1936.
