[André Breton].
L'Union libre. Sans lieu, 1931. In-12 oblong : mastic morocco, spine ribbed, brown morocco title-piece, untrimmed, gilt head, Japanese paper cover (period binding). First edition published anonymously. Limited edition of 75 copies: one of 65 on grey matt coated paper (no. 48). Remarkable poem in homage to women in general and not to a particular one, as José Pierre points out, adding: "Even if the woman's body is celebrated with the highest exaltation, the love hymn frees itself from the usual aesthetic criteria. Breton does not shy away from the novelty, even brutal, of images, provided that they end up appearing to hold a correctness based on the truth of sensations" (Breton, Complete Works II, p. 1319). The poem will be included in Le Revolver à cheveux blancs the following year. Important period binding by Georges Hugnet, unsigned: the linings and endpapers use superb original decals by Hugnet himself. Spine and edges of boards browned; small epidermis on lower board.
