André BRETON.
At the black washhouse. No place or date [1935-1936]. Autograph manuscript signed "André Breton": 5 pages in-4, in a black half-maroquin folder. Autograph manuscript signed in green ink on six sheets of old laid paper, probably from the 18th century, removed from a blank notebook (traces of sewing). It contains about fifteen corrections or additions. The text was published by Guy Levis Mano in 1936, illustrated by Marcel Duchamp. One evening, when I was talking more than usual, a large butterfly entered: taken by an unspeakable terror, a terror with a hint of wonder, as I was opposing it with the large, disordered gestures that I thought would make it flee, it fixed itself on my lips. The text has slight variations from the printed version (cf. OEuvres complètes II, Pléiade, pp. 669-672).
