André BRETON.
Fata Morgana. Illustrated by Wilfredo [sic] Lam. Buenos Aires, SUR, 1942. Large in-8 : paperback, filled cover. Second original edition of 250 copies. It is illustrated with 6 line drawings by Wifredo Lam, 4 of which are full-page. The painter's first name is spelled with an "l" on the title. The original edition was completed in Marseille in March 1941, "but, as Breton recounts in his interviews, the text was refused censorship. Hence the singularity of a few surviving copies marked A, B, C, D and E: the lines printed on the page of the justification are crossed out and replaced by a short handwritten text, in the poet's handwriting, mentioning that the Clermont- Ferrand press control having, by decision of 6 March, deferred publication "until the definitive conclusion of the peace", only these "five proofs coloured by hand by the artist" were printed. The poem was first published in an English translation by Clark Mills in the American journal New Directions in Prose and Poetry. The French text was published in booklet form in 1942 in Buenos Aires by the Éditions des Lettres françaises with illustrations by Lam" (Étienne-Alain Hubert in André Breton, OEuvres complètes II, Pléiade, pp. 1786-1787). Autograph letter signed on the false title: "Sur le parcours du lactaire délicieux" où j'aurai connu Robert Valançay André Breton
