André BRETON.
Martinique charmer of snakes. With texts and illustrations by André Masson. Paris, Éditions du Sagittaire, 1948. In-12: pink calf, smooth spine with title in mosaic snakeskin letters, edges of boards decorated with a mosaic of calf pieces in three shades of red, aubergine suede lining and endpapers, gilt edges, illustrated cover and spine preserved, folder, slipcase (Leroux, 1984) First edition. One of the first 15 copies on hollande Pannekoek (no. 7) with an original lithograph by André Masson as frontispiece, printed in red. In 1941, on his way to exile in the United States, André Breton spent a month in Martinique in the company of André Masson: the painter signed a poem at the beginning, Antille, followed by a dialogue with Breton entitled Le Dialogue créole. A very important stay for Breton, who met Aimé Césaire on the spot, whom he mentions at length in Un grand poète noir (pp. 85-107). The Martinique poet offered him a copy of his Cahier du retour au pays natal which Breton considers "the greatest lyrical monument of this time". Beautiful mosaic binding by Georges Leroux.
