Death on Credit. Novel. New edition with 16 drawings by Gen-Paul. Paris, Éditions Denoël, 1942. Large in-8 : black half-maroquin with bands, smooth spine, boards decorated with a geometrical composition mosaic of grey and black box and two large pieces of white vellum streaked with black lines, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (Pierre-Lucien Martin, 1956). First illustrated edition: it was published during the Occupation, six years after the original edition. The illustration includes 16 full-page compositions by Gen Paul. One of 25 copies out of commerce (nº XII) printed on Hollande laid paper - and not on pure vellum as announced in the justification - with all the illustrations hand-coloured by Gen Paul. The copy is further enriched by an original drawing in ink and watercolour on the title. This portrait of a man with Céline's features is initialled by the painter. Autograph letter signed by the illustrator: to Geninasca Gen Paul An unpublished letter from Céline to Gen Paul has been mounted at the head of the book: Dear Popol, For the paper, if you see that it's a bit difficult or too long or that you're too tired of chasing it, say so. I'm planning to... but I'd have to move and I don't want to do that before. I'll be up there Thursday around 11am to see you. Love you Ferd I don't make remarks you know that. It's only if it's a fatigue with your leg and that it can still end in an ulcer. (Autograph letter signed, 1 page in-8; envelope preserved with postmark dated November 19, 1941.) Very nice copy.
