[Marcel DUCHAMP].
The Blindman's Ball. For the Blindman a Magazine of Vers Art. Friday May 25th at Ultra Bohemian Prehistoric, Post Alcoholic Webster Hall 119 East 11th Street. Dancing eight-thirty. New York, [1917]. Illustrated poster, printed in blue and red: under glass, natural wood frame. A very rare poster promoting the magazine The Blindman: it is illustrated with a composition by Beatrice Wood. Published by Marcel Duchamp, Henri-Pierre Roché and Beatrice Wood, The Blindman had only two issues in April and May 1917. The masked ball held on May 25 was intended to bail out the magazine. "The exuberant night ended in the early morning at the Arensbergs' and Duchamp's - a license that earned Beatrice a green scolding from her mother. The existence of The Blind Man is finally put to the test by Roché against Francis Picabia, director of the rival review, 391. At the 34th movement, Roché forfeits. The Blind Man disappears for good" (Séverine Gossart). Copy with Beatrice Wood's autograph signature affixed at a later date. Stamp of the R.J. Vandevelde collection. The poster has been restored (notably a tear at the foot) and delicately lined on very fine Japanese paper. (Centre Pompidou, Dada, p. 193: note by Séverine Gossart.- The poster does not appear in Arturo Schwarz's catalogue, The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp.)
