Paul Eluard.
Le Devoir et l'Inquiétude, poems followed by Le Rire d'un autre. Decorated with a woodcut by André Deslignères. Paris, A.-J. Gonon, 1917. In-12 : half tan morocco with bands, smooth spine, untrimmed, gilt head, marbled paper cover printed in gold and spine preserved (G. Gauché). First edition: decorated with a woodcut by André Deslignères as a frontispiece. Limited edition of 206 copies: one of 200 on Arches laid paper (no. 112). Paul Eluard's third book, edited by his friend Gonon, both his first publisher and one of his usual bookbinders. The collection includes the poems of Le Devoir (1916) plus eleven texts entitled Le Rire d'un autre, all written at the front. Autograph letter signed on the false title: to Robert Valançay Paul Eluard " je mènerai mon enfant Partout où je n'ai pas été" A pleasant copy. The bookbinder's knife was slightly too greedy to gild the head.
