Rehearsals. Drawings by Max Ernst. Paris, Au Sans Pareil, 1922. In-8 : red half calf with bands, smooth spine, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine kept (A. Lobstein). First edition. It is illustrated with 10 full-page compositions by Max Ernst, including the coloured frontispiece. The cover also bears the reproduction of a collage on a paste-up. Limited edition of 350 copies: copy no. 234 on glossy paper. First book produced jointly by Paul Eluard and Max Ernst: "By a curious phenomenon of osmosis and mimicry, the two artists managed to give exact plastic (eleven collages) and poetic (forty-nine poems) equivalents of the same intangible data. One cannot speak of "illustrations" or "legends", even less of Repetitions, but rather of miraculous correspondences" (Michel Sanouillet, Dada in Paris, p. 363). Autograph letter signed : to Madame Valentine Hugo these old poems where words continue to want to kill others, these sentences where silence plays the solitude, very friendly Paul Eluard We have mounted at the top of the book the handwritten copy, in the hand of his daughter Cécile, of the long letter of dedication addressed by Paul Eluard to Jacques Doucet, which accompanied the autograph manuscript of the book.
