Georges HUGNET.
Two girls were raped like a glove. The mother pearl still remains. No place or date [1936]. Original photographic collage on paper (323 x 248 mm), under glass, brown wood frame. Superb original collage: it was reproduced in The Seventh Side of the Die (1936). Famous book illustrated with twenty full-page collages. The publisher, Jeanne Bucher, had given two years earlier Une semaine de bonté, Max Ernst's collage-novel using engravings: Georges Hugnet's use of cut-out photographs gave these "cut-out-poems" a different scope, in the spirit of the "talking collages" that Marcel Mariën was creating at the same time. Exhibition: The Dada & Surrealist word image (1989), with label from the Los Angeles County Museum. Exhibition subsequently shown at the Wadsworth Antheneum and the Schirnkunsthalle. Label from the exhibition The Poet as Artist.
