Vicente HUIDOBRO.
Horizon carré. Paris, Paul Birault, 1917. In-8: paperback, in a black half-maroquin folder and slipcase. First edition published by Paul Birault, the printer of Reverdy's La Lucarne ovale. Edition of 269 copies: one of 250 on simili-japan. First book in French by the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro (1893-1948) who arrived in France a year earlier, in 1916. A friend of Juan Gris, who helped him translate Horizon carré, Huidobro took part in the creation of the review Nord-Sud and frequented the Dadaist circles grouped around Tristan Tzara. Later, as a promoter of the avant-garde in Chile, he was the founder of Creationism. Explaining the title of his work, he remarked that "while others made oval skylights, I made square horizons. And there you have the difference explained in two words." He added, sarcastically, in allusion to Reverdy's collection with whom he had fallen out: "All the skylights are oval, so the poetry remains in realism. The horizons are not square, so the author is presenting here a thing created by him." (Manifestos, 1925, p. 47). Autograph letter signed in red ink on the title page: To Tristan Tzara Yours sincerely Vicente Huidobro Paris - 47 Victor Massé Also in Manifestes, Huidobro noted: "I find in Tristan Tzara admirable poems that are very close to the strictest creationist conception. Although in him creation is generally more formal than fundamental. But the man who wrote the following lines is without a shadow of a doubt a poet."
