Marcel MARIËN.
La Commune sous le feu. 1953. Original collage, 150 x 117 mm, mounted on black paper with autograph caption, signature and date, with an 18th century Dutch printed sheet mounted on the back, under glass, matted and framed in wood. Superb original collage by Marcel Mariën, combining a portrait of Lenin with a female nude. The whole is mounted on black paper, captioned and signed by the artist in silver felt-tip pen. On the back, there is an 18th century leaf with the title printed in Dutch De prachtige Tempel der Zang-Godinnen (The Temple of the Muses). The collage was reproduced in No. 8 of the magazine Les Lèvres nues (May 1956). An astonishing tribute to the Bolshevik leader by the youngest of the Belgian Surrealists, who was then working as a documentalist at the Soviet embassy. That same year he founded the review Les Lèvres nues, whose number 1 opens with a text by Lenin. One of his emblematic works is precisely entitled : From Sade to Lenin (1945).
