Joan MIRO.
The lizard with golden feathers. Poem illuminated by the author. Paris, Louis Broder, 1971. Oblong folio, leaves, illustrated cover, white vellum folder with small overlaps bearing the title in grey, ecru cloth box bearing the author's name in grey (publisher's slipcase). First edition: text and illustrations by Miró. Limited edition of 195 copies on Rives vellum (no. 50), signed by Miró. The illustration includes 15 colour lithographs by Miró, two of which are double-page spreads. The last book published by Louis Broder, Le Lézard aux plumes d'or (The Lizard with the Golden Feathers) reproduces, with a few modifications, the Jeux poétiques (Poetic Games) published by Miró in the magazine Cahiers d'art in 1946. The text, deliberately disjointedly calligraphed by the painter, has been reproduced by Féquet and Baudier. "Critics have said that Miró's paintings reflect a child's world, a statement that readily applies to the handwriting in Le Lézard. [...] The awkwardly formed letters of each word are undeniably "tied" together to reconstitute the unity of the word. [...] The handwriting discourages both standardization and mechanization. Each page, each cluster, each word, each letter asserts its uniqueness and thus pushes in the direction of art as irresistibly as its graphic accompaniment does" (Renee Riese-Hubert). Perfect copy. (Cramer, Joan Miró, les livres illustrés, nº 148. - Riese-Hubert, Surrealism and the Book, p. 102.)
