La Métromanie ou les Dessous de la capitale by Jean Paulhan calligraphied and decorated with drawings by his friend Jean Dubuffet. Paris, Edmond and Jacques Desjobert, December 1949. In-4 : brown cloth, title in gilt letters on the first cover (publisher's binding). First edition: a remarkable book entirely calligraphed and illustrated by Jean Dubuffet, reproduced in lithography. Limited edition of 150 copies: one of 125 on mouse-grey rag paper, thus justified in blue ink by Jean Dubuffet: "drawn especially for André Breton. Important autograph lettering signed: to André Breton high prince of our places with the fervent affection of Jean Dubuffet Remarkable provenance: the lettering dates from the beginnings of the Compagnie de l'Art Brut in which André Breton participated. The latter shared with Dubuffet a fascination for the marginalized. "This intense and dazzling friendship would nevertheless take on confl ictual overtones, particularly with regard to the notion of "the art of the insane", the source of an unavoidable rupture" (Société des Amis de la Fondation Dubuffet).
