[Catherine ROBBE-GRILLET sous le pseudonyme de] Jean de BERG.
L'Image. Paris, les Éditions de Minuit, 1956. In-12: black plastic-coated calf, smooth spine, mosaic decoration on the boards with four black and white images in the corners, a strip of old rose box in the centre and a red box tablet in relief depicting the female sex in a stylised manner, old rose box lining, parma suede endpapers, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine preserved, folder, case (Leroux, 1986). First edition. One of the 90 first copies on vellum pur fil (nº 26), the only ones with an original burin by Hans Bellmer on the frontispiece. First book by Catherine Rstakian, who was to marry Alain Robbe-Grillet a year later, this sadomasochistic tale was published by subscription in a limited uncut edition: "this precaution did not prevent it from being seized and its print run partly destroyed. It was made into a film by Radley Metzger in 1974". (Henri Vignes). The preface signed with the initials P.R., an allusion to the pseudonym Pauline Réage to whom the book is dedicated, is by Alain Robbe- Grillet. Suggestive decorated binding by Georges Leroux, remarkably executed. (Vignes, Bibliographie des Éditions de Minuit, nº 250: "First book by the author, conceived on the model of Histoire d'O.")
