Jindrich ŠTYRSKÝ & TOYEN.
Erotika Revue. Prague, 1930-1931. 3 volumes in-12 in sheets, in publisher's orange cardboard folder with title pasted on the first cover and on the spine: preserved in a modern decorated paper slipcase. The protest eroticism of the Prague surrealists. Published in Prague between 1930 and 1931 by Editions 69, Erotika Revue includes erotic texts by authors such as Baudelaire, Rimbaud or Swinburne and displays a protest humor through pornographic images, some of which are signed by Toyen, Štyrský, Bidlo or Kresba. In spite of a relatively high initial print run of 150 to 250 copies, it is extremely rare, with only a few complete copies having survived Although not one of the copies of the first edition, this copy nevertheless has the characteristics of the first edition. In addition to the photographic prints of pornographic images, the first volume (one of the 120 copies on imitation japan, no. 61) has two silver photomontages signed by Štyrský and eight watercolour images by Toyen; the second volume (one of the 250 copies, no. 114) has an etching signed by Karel Teige; the third and last volume is number 83 of 200. A very fine copy. A partially faded stamp. (Argo and Galerie Hlavniho, Cesky Surrealismus 1929-1953, Prague, 1996, pp. 54-65.)
