Portrait of Leon Trotsky. No place or date [Mexico, ca. 1939-1940]. Original photograph, silver print (240 x 178 mm), mounted on card stock with a letter from Natalia Sedova-Trotsky dated May 11, 1941. Beautiful photographic portrait of the exiled revolutionary. The print is signed in pencil on the card stock: "Apey, U.S.A." Handwritten by Leon Trotsky's widow in the lower right corner of the photograph: To our dearest and most faithful friends Sophie and Manuel with deepest feelings Natalia Trotsky Coyoacán May 11, 1941 It was precisely in Coyoacán, a district of Mexico City, that Leon Trotsky was assassinated by an agent of Stalin nearly a year earlier, on August 20, 1940.
