Important limestone capital sculpted in high... - Lot 2 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Important limestone capital sculpted in high relief with traces of polychromy, probably representing Daniel in the lion's den. On one corner, the bearded prophet is standing, wearing a long tunic resembling an apron; he is framed by two creatures symbolizing lions that hold him by the waist and with which he is chained; with his arms raised, he plunges his right hand into the mouth of one, his left hand grasping the snout of the other; in the lower register are depicted the loaves of bread brought by Habakkuk to supply him. On the third side, a fabulous animal. Saintonge, circa 1100 Height: 45 cm - Width: 49 cm - Depth: 43 cm (erosion and some missing parts) Provenance: former private collection, Bordeaux If not for the presence of what appear to be loaves of bread, placed on either side of the legs of the main character, one could see in this iconography an image of man, on the one hand in the grip of evil with his hand devoured by a monster, on the other in the mastery of his manly strength holding the snout of another monster.
