A travertine stone plaque carved in bas-relief... - Lot 3 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A travertine stone plaque carved in bas-relief representing a Tree of Life originating in an antique vase of baluster form. The branches of vines inhabited by six birds form symmetrical volutes on either side of a central axis; moulded frame. Veneto-Byzantine, 12th century Height: 42.8 cm - Length: 57.5 cm - Depth: 5.8 cm This panel was part of a choir enclosure in a church, such as can still be seen in situ in the Venetian region. In Torcello, the church of Santa Maria Assunta still preserves a fine example with panels of a composition very similar to this one. The decorative subjects are always organized around a central axis evoking the Fountain or the Tree of Life, themes very often represented in the Mediterranean world.
